AECT Standard 5

(Research): Candidates explore, evaluate, synthesize, and apply methods of inquiry to enhance learning and improve performance.

College Affordability and ROI

Artifact 1

College Affordability and ROI Articulate Presentation

Context & Conditions: EDET603 Design and Development Tools I, Fall 2023, Dr. Carmen Weaver. Study of multimedia elements (e.g., graphics, animation, audio, and video) including the creation and editing of materials. Instructional applications, copyright issues, and technology limitations will be explored.

I approached this assignment as someone with a background in business. Even public colleges are a de facto business with income, expenses and a product to market. If their product isn't effective, efficient, and accessible customers {students) aren't buying. If UPS drivers making $170,000 a year, why go to college?

Scope: “The overall goal of this project is to explore the technology trends for teaching and learning through the annual Horizon Report, as well as prepare a lesson to teach your colleagues. Additionally, this project focuses on tools that can be used for e-learning module development.”

Online education may be a good solution for students, but what about for college? More and more colleges are closing each year. Can switching to online help? MrEd.Tech investigates the market in this presentation. 2023 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report Teaching and Learning Edition page 12-13.

Role: This was an individual assignment in which I was the sole researcher and author.

Instructional Design: The Horizon Report “identifies emerging technologies likely to have an impact on teaching and learning in various contexts.”  Consider the presentation an analysis constructed using ADDIE. I considered the audience, those who have a stake hold in education, in the analysis stage.   Design  and development  stages goal is  to communicating information.   Viewing the presentation is the implementation stage .  In the evaluation stage, does the material have a positive impact on the organization.

Related performance indicators:

  • Theoretical Foundations: The research I performed preparing this presentation demonstrates my foundational knowledge of the contribution of research to the past and current theory of educational communications and technology. Most of us have a myopic view of education thinking this is the way it has always been,  Yet higher education has changed and will continue to change. Research on education return on investment helped me to understand the economics of higher education and to establish the goals of improving efficiency, effectiveness, and accessibility.

  • Method: This artifact demonstrates my ability to apply research methodologies to solve problems and enhance practice. After decades of growth higher education is facing a crisis. Many are predicting a coming enrollment cliff.   Online education done right may be the solution for many colleges. Will we learn how to do it right? Or will we cling to outdated methods?

  • Assessing/Evaluating: This artifact demonstrates my ability to apply formal strategies in assessing and evaluating processes and resources for learning and performance.  This project highlighted the importance of tracking economic trends in education. When one evaluates the data they should realize that something has to be done, and something will be done, by the market if not by the institutions.

  • Ethics: My work demonstrates my ability to conduct research and practice using accepted professional and institutional guidelines and procedures. While the report is based on secondary research we need the ability to read trends without doing the primary research ourselves.

Reflection:

A. The Future

Online education has the potential to be the solution to many problems. It can be more effective than face to face and can be demonstrated by research. Scaling and proper management can lead to better efficiency.  There is little doubt the online education is more accessible. The question is how well will it be done.

B. Development Tools

This lesson helped me understand the business of education, and the value of education. Institutions must attract students and provide a service if they intend to survive and to thrive. Online education has the potential of reducing the cost of education making learning more efficient. At the same time technology has the potential of making online education more effective than brick and mortar education. Additional online education can make education more accessible to anyone, anywhere, at anytime.

Most of the presentations in my portfolio are in PowerPoint, one is web based and another uses 7taps. This course was built using the trial version of Articulate which expired all too soon.  Classwork took up  all my free time. It is essential that a professional instructional designer becomes proficient in a featured authoring tool. As I am nearing the end of the program I 'm subscribing now to Articulate. The next step is learning to use Articulate better. There is so much to learn. For example, I couldn't get this presentation to share publicly. Publishing in Rise 360 requires a SC.edu password to view. When I followed the instructions for publishing to the web, the link opens the index file rather than executing it.  One thing I learned from my years as a construction project manager was always have a plan B. The link above is from Review 360 as if I was sending  it out to a reviewer, but it works for now.  This is an example of discovering solutions, see Standard 2 Artifact 1.

Effectiveness Evaluation Plan Proposal

Effectiveness Evaluation Plan Proposal

Context & Conditions: EDET793 Advance Instructional Design and Development, Spring 2024, Dr. Michael M. Grant. Incorporation of instructional design criteria, multimedia development skills, knowledge of instructional methods, learning theory, and evaluation to develop a comprehensive multimedia or Web-based instructional project.

We all bring different skills to the table. Alison Beers and Skyler Hardy know a lot more about education than I do. Coming from a background in Construction Management I bring organization skills to the table. We came together as a team to product a quality product.

Scope: This module focuses on applying knowledge and skills as an instructional designer with regard to program evaluation. Program evaluation is often conducted external to the development of the instructional or learning contents, or as a consultant. An evaluator must negotiate tricky political or bureaucratic relationships when reporting on the quality and implementation of a program. The evaluator must devise a robust summative evaluation plan for the tablet computer implementation.

We all had different ideas on direction. I wanted to solve the problem but that didn't really match the assignment. Alison and Skyler had to reel me in.

Role: This was a collaborative project completed with Skyler Hardy and Alison Beers. At first I was on a tangent to solve the problem and provided research references. What was really needed was a method to organize the evaluation. I provided a chart and outline. Skyler and Ali were great at completing it.

Instructional Design: We followed an evaluation guide provided by Morrison, Ross, Morrison, and Kalman (2019) Designing Effective Instruction to create a template in which we answered questions to develop an evaluation plan.

Related performance indicators:

  • Theoretical Foundations: This artifact  demonstrates my foundational knowledge of the contribution of research to the past and current theory of educational communications and technology. As novices we only need to allow the experts to guide us. I was reminded of this in the evaluation stage of Standard 1 Artifact 2, I only needed to go back to the  template I created in this project and draw from Skyler's and Ali's inspiration in completing it.

  • Method: This artifact demonstrates my, or more accurately our, ability  to apply research methodologies to solve problems and enhance practice. MRK provided the guidance, we only need to follow it. We learn by doing.

  • Assessing/Evaluating: This artifact demonstrates my, or more accurately our, ability to apply formal strategies in assessing and evaluating processes and resources for learning and performance. Again we only needed to follow the guidance of MRK to establish a framework. From there the blanks only needed to be filled in.

  • Ethics: My work demonstrates my ability to conduct research and practice using accepted professional and institutional guidelines and procedures. Even when we are part of a team we are individually responsible.

Reflection:

Evaluation is where we consider how well we are performing as an instructional designer. Are our learning experiences effective in communicating the subject matter? Are our learning experiences efficient in the use of the learner’s time? Are our learning experiences accessible to all learners or do they create unnecessary barriers? Yes, should be the answer to each of these questions.

Evaluation is where we begin the online instructional design process when there already exists a traditional instruction. A survey of existing and past students will tell us something about future students.

Again I must praise my teammates. This project was better than I could have done on my own.
